Margaret Thatcher called his organization, ANC, in 1987, “a typical terrorist organization“.
He was on the US Terrorist Watch list until 2008.
In 1986 Ronald Reagan warned the Republican led Congress not to pass an Anti Apartheid bill. When it passed, Reagan vetoed it. But Congress overruled it with a 2/3rds vote.
Then-Congressman Dick Cheney was one of the few Republicans that voted against the bill.
In 2000 he stood by his vote.
“[Mandela] deserves an enormous amount of credit for the transformation of South Africa,” Cheney said on ABC’s This Week, “but I don’t have any problems at all with the vote I cast 20 years ago.”
