ten years ago today sonic youth was fixin to play sunset junction

    sonic youth thurston moore

for six bucks you could walk around sunset and commune
and rock out and dance and ride the rides and take pics
and eat things on a stick and drink beers
and be one with our neighborhood.

this will be the second year in a row without sunset junction.
i think thats a bad thing.
also, kim and thurston divorced, which is also heartbreaking.

arent things supposed to get better as time goes by?

    especially kool things?

you know whats gonna be around in ten years

this is why life isnt fair

    affliction shirts.

    bet.

sunset junction street festival canceled for 2011

terrible news today when the city of los angeles denied a permit to the non profit behind the 31 year old Sunset  Junction Street Festival.

a festival that happens in the City Council president’s district.

    BFFs of the mayor.

And still its dead in the water?

longtime readers of the busblog know how important this festival is to residents of los feliz, silver lake, and east hollywood as it allows all the diverse cultures to intertwine over two days in a way thats subtle and beautiful.

even though LA is overflowing with musicians, some of them even locals, it’s a surprising rare treat to see them playing outside at local festivals

but that happens at sunset junction.

    melrose larry green in 2004

actually a lot happens at sunset junction. people eat chicken on a stick and hear reggae, people nibble on churros and browse for tshirts,

you can get a Hep shot there, you can meet people you aint never met before.

you can dress exactly how you wanna dress

    gay, straight,

in a gang, retired from your gang, hipster, poseur, tourist, didnt matter, everyone was welcome,

and everyone could play some carnival games and roam around Sunset Blvd.

look at how happy these drunken people are laughing at the sunset

does a tattoo exist if no one sees it?

    even a cool one?

now im a crazy person, that cannot be denied.

but Los Angeles is a city in a huge financial crisis, right?

you’re telling me that even though Ticketmaster wrote a six figure check, the city still thinks that its a good idea NOT to allow a situation

where you can tax people on a weekend as they buy overpriced beers and slurpees in flower pots?

you want those people to go to anaheim or something?

or tax them as they buy stuff drunk on the streets of your fair city?

call me crazy but if i was the city id say look we will let the show go on under one condition:

whoever has been running it the last two three years has to step down on monday.

and that would give us the right signal that things seriously are going to change, like you’ll pay your bills and clean up afterwards.

but thats me, a crazy person, who enjoys walking to the best street fest in so cal.

is Sunset Junction a hipster prom?

    sorta.

its also a gay mans prom

its also a hot babe’s prom

its also a street dance party

a place to get your palm read

    and a latin american prom

and a carnival right on sunset blvd. so what?

is it too expensive? yes, $20 for a neighborhood fair is too much. so? water should be free but we have bought in to the lie that bottled water should exist. and $4 cups of coffee. we will survive. some of us with our sense of humor in tact.

people who whine that sunset junction is too cool for school or too expensive are the same bores who tell their lovers theyre too tired to have sex, maybe tomorrow.

theyre the same imbeciles who say theyd never live in malibu cuz its too far away. FROM WHAT EXACTLY?

yes sunset junction is a menage of cultures and fashion and hair styles and music. THATS THE DAMN POINT!

of course the people running it have turned their back on the ideal that it should be a non profit event – hi this is LA what on earth do you expect of your neighbors if not greed and capitalism and lies and deceit. and funny hair dos

these are people who would bottle smog if they could.

me, i love sunset junction. i hardly ever see gay guys running around in their underwear and for 1 day a year its awesome.

i love to smell all the delicious foods that are bad for my girlish figure

i love all the dirty tshirts you can buy for five bucks

i love to hear all the terrible bands whos music i wouldnt even bother to steal off napster

i love to play the carnival games and talk politics with the carnies.

this is what youre supposed to do.

youre not supposed to do the same thing you do every weekend. youre supposed to live a little and eat chicken on a stick and dance with the mamacitas outside the reggae ice cream truck.

youre supposed to browse for new posters for your loo

youre supposed to flirt with girls half your age and tell them that if they laugh they have to give you their phone numbers

youre supposed to take pictures of old people with tattoos.

youre supposed to live like a east sider which means not giving an f what any one else thinks, especially those who think that east hollywood silver lake and los feliz are not on the east side.

youre supposed to close yr eyes and pray to Jah and thank Him for all these blessings.

just like youve done year after year after year after year after year after year after year after year.

people who hate on sunset junction are whiners

    nothing more

its a fun place to eat and drink with our neighbors

    or have a relaxing massage

and of course, its a fun place to buy things you dont really need

i ran into SXSW stalwart and long time blogger Monique Judge at the American Apparel tent

she had people buying lots of these tank tops

my truest and i danced at the reggae van like everyone else (you really cant resist)

the little kids played carnival games

or got pulled along in their wagons along with their dogs

and the big kids (like us) took in the swing ride

    omg it was fun

    cya next year sunset junction!
